At that time, existing airports used a two-letter abbreviation based on the weather station at each airport. Back then, LA served as the designation for the Los Angeles International Airport here in Westchester, CA. But as the aviation industry began growing at such a rapid rate, the identifying designations had to be expanded to 3 letters by the 1950s. So LA became LAX.
